Scalping means taking many short trades that each aim for a few pips, held for seconds or minutes. Because every trade is small, the cost of getting in and out is large by comparison. A scalping expert advisor's results depend as much on your spread, commission, execution and broker rules as on its entry logic.

How scalping EAs trade

A scalping EA usually runs on M1 to M5 charts, or reacts to individual ticks. Some trade momentum, entering in the direction of a sharp burst and taking a few pips of follow-through. Others fade small stretches away from a short moving average or band, often in a quiet session. Most use a small fixed take profit and stop loss, a maximum spread filter and a trading-hours window. Scalping indicators tend to be short-period oscillators, bands, session markers and spread displays that show whether conditions suit a trade at all.

Costs as a share of the target

On EURUSD a standard lot is worth $10 per pip, so a 1-pip spread costs $10 per lot, and a commission of $7 per lot round turn adds the equivalent of 0.7 pips. That is 1.7 pips, or $17 per lot, before the trade has done anything. The smaller the target, the larger that share:

Take profitTarget per lotCost per lotCost as a share
3 pips$30$1757%
5 pips$50$1734%
10 pips$100$1717%
20 pips$200$178.5%

Costs also raise the win rate you need. Take a 5-pip target and a 5-pip stop. Before costs, the EA breaks even by winning half its trades. After 1.7 pips of cost, a win nets 3.3 pips and a loss costs 6.7 pips, so it must win 67% of trades just to break even. Add 0.3 pips of average slippage and that rises to 70%. The risk reward calculator shows the break-even win rate for any target and stop.

Execution, latency and broker rules

Slippage is the gap between the price an EA asks for and the price it gets. On a 5-pip trade, half a pip is a tenth of the target, and it can happen on the way in and on the way out. It grows with latency and in fast markets around data releases. A forex VPS near your broker's server cuts the round trip from 100 ms or more on a distant home connection to a few milliseconds.

Read your account terms too. Some restrict very short holding times or strategies that exploit delays in the price feed, and can cancel profits from trades that break those rules. The stops level in the symbol specification sets a minimum stop distance, which can block very tight stops.

Markets and sessions that suit it

Scalpers need the tightest spreads and deepest liquidity: major pairs such as EURUSD and USDJPY during London and the London and New York overlap. Some fade small moves in the quieter Asian hours instead, but spreads widen sharply around the daily rollover. Gold can be scalped with wider targets and stops; see our gold page. The forex market hours tool shows each session in your time zone.

Settings that matter

  • Maximum spread. Set it from your account's typical spread, not the best one you have seen.
  • Take profit and stop loss. Usually in points. On a 5-digit EURUSD feed, 10 points is 1 pip, so 50 means 5 pips.
  • Maximum deviation. How far from the requested price an order may fill. Too tight on an instant-execution account means requotes and missed trades.
  • Trading hours. Read in broker server time, not your local clock.
  • Risk percent. With very small stops this can produce large lots, so check the margin.

How to test a scalper honestly

A scalper's edge lives inside individual bars, so the modelling mode decides whether a backtest means anything. In MT5, use Every tick based on real ticks, which replays your broker's recorded prices and spreads. MT4's Every tick builds ticks from one-minute bars with a fixed spread, so when a target and stop both sit inside one bar, the tester has to guess which came first.

Then make the test harder than live trading should be. Include commission; MT4 has no field for it, so add it to the spread. Repeat with a spread 50% wider, and in MT5 set Delays to random. Finally, run the EA on demo for a few weeks and compare its fills with a backtest of the same dates.

Checks before running one

  1. Know the cost. Work out spread plus commission as a share of the target with the pip value calculator.
  2. Test on real ticks. Follow how to backtest an EA with your broker's data and commission.
  3. Read the account terms. Check for minimum holding times and the stops level.
  4. Measure latency. Read the ping in MetaTrader's status bar on your VPS.
  5. Size from the stop. Use the position size calculator and the limits in risk management for EA trading.
  6. Compare demo with the backtest. If the demo's average profit per trade falls well short, costs are eating the edge.

Frequently asked questions

What spread do I need for a scalping EA?

Low enough that spread plus commission stays a small share of the take profit. With a 5-pip target on EURUSD, a 1-pip spread and a $7 round-turn commission cost 1.7 pips, which is 34% of the target. Treat the EA's documented maximum spread as a ceiling, and check your account's typical spread at the hours the EA actually trades.

Why does my scalper do well in backtests and badly live?

Backtests on generated ticks or a fixed low spread hide the costs that decide a scalper's result. Live trading adds slippage, wider spreads at session opens and rollover, commission and latency. Retest on real ticks with commission included and a wider spread, then compare a demo run with a backtest of the same dates.

Do I need a VPS for a scalping EA?

It matters more for scalping than for any other style. A VPS close to your broker's trade server cuts latency to a few milliseconds, which reduces slippage, and keeps the EA running when your computer is off. It can't fix a spread or commission that is too high for the strategy.

Do brokers allow scalping EAs?

Many do, but the rules vary by broker and account type. Some terms set a minimum holding time or ban strategies that exploit delays in the price feed, and profits from trades that break those rules can be cancelled. Read the terms for your account before running a scalper live.

What timeframe do scalping EAs use?

Most work on M1 to M5, and some react to individual ticks whatever the chart timeframe. Run the EA on the timeframe it was built and tested on, because its stops and filters are tuned to that bar size.
